Kilt socks, also referred to as hose, are traditionally worn pulled up to cover the calf and positioned just below the knee. Crafted with additional length, they allow for folding over the elastic of the flashes, resulting in a cuff typically about 3 inches in height.

In formal settings, ecru (or cream) socks are traditionally paired with a Prince Charlie jacket, or alternatively, tartan kilt hose can be chosen. However, recent trends have seen a shift towards personal preference, granting individuals the freedom to select socks that align with their unique style. Consequently, navy, black, and charcoal have emerged as the favoured options.

For less formal occasions or daytime events, opting for a solid sock colour that complements the tartan or accentuates a shade in the sett of the kilt is customary. This not only adds a personalised touch to the ensemble but also allows for versatility in styling. Moreover, rolling down the kilt socks and pairing them with boots has become increasingly popular for a more casual look. This relaxed vibe is ideal for various occasions, whether it's a leisurely outing to the pub, going to a football match, or enjoying a day out at the rugby.

To put on kilt socks properly, it's best to be seated and have your garter flashes and Sgian Dubh (if wearing one) nearby. Begin by pulling the socks up, ensuring that the ribs on the socks are straight. Pull the hose up over your knee, leaving some room to fold it down later.

Next, fasten your garter flashes about 1 to 2 inches below the base of your knee, with the coloured flashes positioned on the outside of your leg. Once the garters are securely fastened, fold the sock down to create a cuff approximately 3 inches in size. This cuff should cover the garter elastic while leaving the coloured flashes visible.

Ensure that the top of your kilt hose sits just below the base of your knee for the most comfortable fit and traditional look. Once you’re happy the sgian dubh should be secured beneath the outside of the sock on your dominant side.
