A brooch rooted in centuries of Scottish history. The penannular design, a circular form with a fixed central pin, was near universal as a garment fastener in the Iron Age, and was enthusiastically adopted and refined by the peoples of Scotland and Ireland between 700 and 900AD.
This brooch brings that tradition forward with a richly detailed thistle motif. The thistle has been a national symbol of Scotland since at least the reign of James III, and as the Renaissance took hold it became one of the country's most enduring decorative emblems, representing the hardy and distinctive character of the Scottish landscape and its people. This piece is intended to carry that confidence forward, evoking medieval, Renaissance, and modern Scotland in a single object.
Completely designed, cast, and finished in Glasgow workshops from 100% lead-free pewter, this is a large brooch measuring 124mm long and 80mm wide. It is ideally suited for use with a fly plaid or shawl, fastening to the shoulder to act as a weight and keep the plaid in place. Supplied in a presentation box as standard.
